SAP (Substance Abuse Professional) Information
for Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Holders
The Department of Transportation (DOT) agencies include the FAA, FMCSA, FRA, FTA, USCG and PHMSA. Each agency maintains specific regulations to ensure that their safety-sensitive employees are drug- and alcohol-free. When a drug and/or alcohol test is failed, mandatory requirements must be followed before one is allowed to return to work.
This is where the SAP process comes in. A Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) performs an evaluation and may recommend courses, counseling and/or treatment to help with substance abuse. Dr. Bridgette Williams is a certified SAP and can provide all necessary counseling services and treatment programs to help drivers to restore their commercial license. If you have been told to complete a program with an SAP, you are at the right place. Successfully complying with SAP recommendations, follow-up evaluations and testing negative for drugs and/or alcohol means you can return to service. You will be subject to follow-up testing at least six times during the next 12 months. And prepare for random testing for up to five years.
